CLEAN BENCHES (Laminar Flow Cabinets)

A clean bench is a type of laminar flow cabinet that is typically used to supply dust and particle free HEPA-filtered air when performing experiments or working with electronic devices. The ambient air is pulled into the cabinet and passed through a HEPA filter. The filtered air is passed over the experiment or devices and exhausted directly onto the worker. In other words, clean benches provide only product protection against contamination but DO NOT afford protection to the worker. Consequently, laminar flow clean benches should never be used when handling drug formulations, infectious materials, radioactivity or any other potentially hazardous materials. For such purposes, a biological safety cabinet that is designed to provide both product and worker protection should be used. Clean benches can sometimes be termed as cell culture hoods, tissue culture hoods or laminar flow hoods.

Types of work that can be done in a laminar flow clean bench:

· Work with non-hazardous materials where clean, particle-free air quality is required
· Pharmacy drug preparation
· Media plate preparation
· Cell culture and plant tissue culture (if cultures are harmless to personnel and environment)
· RNA/DNA
· Assembly of sterile equipment and electronic devices

Horizontal Clean Benches (HCB)

A horizontal clean bench (HCB) pushes air through a HEPA filter and directs the filtered air horizontally over the work surface at a constant speed, toward the worker. HCB generally have a taller and larger loading and working area than vertical clean benches. This allows instruments like microscopes to be placed inside. HCB is typically preferred for plant tissue culture, media plate preparation, electronics inspection, medical device assembly and pharmacy drug preparation. The absence of sash in HCB provides an advantage when placing instruments and equipment inside.

Vertical Clean Benches (VCB)

A vertical clean bench (VCB) pushes air through a HEPA filter which is located at the top of enclosure. The air is directed downward onto the work surface at a constant speed. VCB offer a pivoting glass sash as a safety measure. This sash offers personal protection and a physical barrier when working with chemicals. VCB is preferred in microbiology, forensic, biotech and many other industries.
